So my computer died last night, conveniently right before a LAN party. Apparently writing to various bits in memtest86 is too hard for my computer. But that desktop's had a decent run(1.5 years), so I guess I should look into my options for this weekend and gaming in general:

Computer for LAN party

Buy and build a new desktop this week
5(26.3%)
Buy a new laptop(possibly a MacBook)
2(10.5%)
Bring my work laptop and play on it(decent for gaming)
3(15.8%)
Slum it and play on one of the computers provided by the host.

My desktop is going on seven years. I think you're just too rough with your toys. :)

I think this machine had some heat issues alongside with lots of random little problems throughout its life.

I picked the last option for short term, but if I were buying a new laptop, it would definitely be a MacBook.

Bring your monitor if you decide to use one of mine. I can put you on one of the machines with a 7950 GX2 card, that should run a 24 inch fine.

You can buy one of mine if you like, I am going to start selling them so I can keep building since it's pretty much turned into a hobby.

Also, if you want, I can take your old desktop and test which parts are bad. That maybe you can reuse certain parts. If you decide to scrap it all together, I can just gut and use it at future Lan parties.

Let me know what you decide.

How much would you want for a computer?

I'd be tempted simply because it's the most hassle-free way to take care of my current computer problems, but on the other hand, I also enjoy the computer-building process.

How much would you want for one of the machines? That definitely sounds like a far better option than trying to build one at the last minute.

I'll write down the specs tonight and get back to you on a price. Bring your monitor and I'll put you on the machine you might potentially buy to see if you like it.

The one I am thinking about has Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz, 320GB HD, 2 GB DDR2-800, BFG 7950 GT, CD/DVD Combo, ASUS MicroATX MB.

Try before you buy, now that's service!

Do you know how the 7950GT measures up to the 7900GT offhand(since that's what's in my current box)? I think that'd be the main bit that I'd be hesitant to spend money on if it's not a huge deal performancewise. I'll make sure to bring my monitor regardless.

Mine's a BFG 7900 model number BFGR79256GTOCE. Doing a quick google search for reviews seems to have it as placing between a 7900GT and a 7900GTX, which makes it a pretty solid performance jump.

I would not rush the purchase/build of a new computer, so I picked Option 4.

Why are MacBooks all the rage these days? I hardly keep up anymore.

As far as laptops go, the MacBooks don't really carry a significant price premium over their PC counterparts(for the same quality and performance points). Add that with the general cool factor that all Apple products carry nowadays and the ability to run Windows on them(both in Boot Camp and through Parallels/VMware) you've got a really sleek package.

Well, a number of us are video editors, and only Macs can run Final Cut- and with Boot Camp and the other VM systems we can still run our Windows programs. And they're pretty much the same cost (from my looking around) as an equivalent spec Windows laptops- so you've got the ability to pick and choose what OS you use.

With a bit of work, you can run OSX on standard issue PCs:

Like Nick, I wouldn't rush building a new computer, but I picked 3 since you said it's workable for games.
