Jun. 27th, 2006 @ 03:39 pm Through both hell and high water
I have returned "home"(though I'm posting from work since my internet went down last night after another power outage). Though with all of the power surges due to the lovely DC weather, I have a fried power supply on my gaming machine and a router with a seemingly non-functional WAN port. Maybe I'm catching zombiehime's curse...

Doh! You don't want to catch what I've got! Good luck resurrecting your machines. :P

What sort of terrible computer-devouring curse do you have?

As near as I can tell, I seem to turn into a walking EMP from time to time. This usually affects my own computers and other electronics (I could recite a long litany of computer parts, TVs, GPSes, etc. dead long before their time), but it has occasionally spread to drfell's machines or other unlucky things.

It's not a very good superpower to have. Especially when one works with computers for a living.

After getting a new power supply, my gaming machine seems to be peachy keen. I think this one was actually the fault of me overloading the power supply with new energy hungry hardware.

I was wondering if you hadn't made it home after your post from Chicago because of that line of storms. Down here in SW Virginia, we don't have quite as much flooding....but we do have a lot of "irony". That's a local joke only worth going into at special request :p

^_^

Ok then.

Back in 1985, there was quite a flood here in Roanoke and it flooded a lot of things. One of those things was a football stadium used for the local high school and called Victory Stadium, dedicated in the 50's.

Here is a pic of that flood, facing the stadium, though you can't see it very well:

They cleaned up but must have been horrible about the upkeep. Just 10 years after that in 1995, "talk" starts about demolishing it and building something new. It took THAT long to decide that the place was already in decay.

Fast foward though 9 years of bitching to the newspaper (while I was down here, there was one letter at *least* every week) and in 2004, a hurricane's aftermath sweeps through and again, floods the stadium. People realize that indeed the stadium is in a flood plain and yet citizens (a very small but vocal group) STILL wants the stadium to stay put.

Stadium sits decaying for another 11 years. FINALLY, this year in the March elections, the council that is elected are all people who want to tear down the stadium. The mayor ok's it. Demolision was scheduled for Monday.

Monday, the stadium flooded one last time :p You know, for old time's sake. According to the locals they interviewed for the 11 pm news, that was god letting them know they made the right decision after 21 years of fighting.
