Random notes of the past couple of weeks as I wind down from work for my actual vacation:

SalsageLan3: A Banger in the Mouth = awesome time, thanks to rys and Belinda(who I amusingly enough ran into today and discovered that I worked in the same building as) for being such an excellent host.

  • Sampled many delicious Belgian beers for 365-Beer.
  • Got to eat tons of the CURRY OF LIFE(TM) as well as vast quantities of grilled SAUSAGE(and other stuff which doesn't quite deserve all caps).
  • Played lots of video games including Call of Duty 2 and Dawn of War(which I'm growing increasingly fond of).
  • And to make it even greater, it was a LAN party where people didn't just sit around and play World of Warcraft!

Tis a shame that I had to leave early for:

dpbcon 2006: Less expensive than eating out twice a day during the same week.

  • It started out with me getting dunked in the pool upon arrival(with time to empty my pockets of electronics), and continued to be a week filled with sun, surf, and shenanigans.
  • The sneak attack on the sand village by the ocean was brilliantly planned and performed. Well trained solders with a water balloon slingshot managed to execute the firing sequence with great precision and with the aid of spotters fired on the target without causing any damage to the civilians surrounding the villiage. This made expecially hilarious when mr_mking was actually telling the villiage elders just minutes earlier that they needed to defend more than just the ocean facing side.
  • Managed to not get eaten alive by the mosquitos(an OBX first). Had the chance to dine some lovely restaurants(Weeping Radish and Black Pelican). I did miss numerous opportunities to get crabs at Dirty Dicks. The BACONPOCALYPSE was a hard fought time, but we managed to survive with flying colors.
  • Smackbooks is a very clever use of built in hardware for a unexpected purpose. At least until people around you figure out that they can use it to interrupt anything(including killing the smackbook software) you're doing by smacking the table that you're working on.
  • Didn't manage to round up enough people for kayaking, but we did log in a few hours on sailboats and jetskis. The hilarity of going fast causing jetski riders to tighten their grip on the handles, making them go faster was beautiful.
  • I don't think I ever got drunk, but I managed to ride a nice level of buzzed for the entire weekend. However, red wine and saunas do not mix(cough princessdiablo
  • Lots of good conversations with a variety of folks that I don't see very often. And as a bonus a lack of explosive drama made for a nice bonus.
  • Next year dpbcon 2007 will be more glorious as we take over the next house over too.
  • But what people actually want to see are the pictures.

Now off to China for 2 weeks.
