My company took us all to go see Gabriel Iglesias at DC Improv. Very funny stuff, esp his nickname of Fluffy added a whole new dimension to the jokes for me. I might've been the only person who was amused at his tales of how he was unable to get fluffy.com for his web site. Before and after the show, I brought around my new digital camera to take some shots. The non-sucky ones are here Though this is one for queftzefoni.

Saturday had the fabulous 26th birthday party of mrsuberfluffy at the Melting Pot. Though we did manage to make the molten cheese and molten chocolatey goodness better(and without bacon) by having princessdiablo come up for the party from the southern reaches of Miami. Photos of this grand event are here.

Today I went to a CMU alumi wine tasting event at Best Cellars. I know a bit about wine, bit it's always a pleasurable experience to learn more about it. Normally it's an expensive interest(like so many of my other hobbies), but this store had a vast selection of inexpensive wines that were pleasing to the palette. The typical wine shop(or wine aisle in a supermarket) have rows upon rows random wines, most of which aren't good despite their cost. Best Cellars is a very bright and open, with each of their wine selections prominently displayed along the wall. The displays could very well be used to showcase paintings and other art in a gallery in a manner that mkincaid would appreciate . Definitely recommended.

Square finally made up for the tragedy that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within when they put out the awesomeness that is Final Fantasy: Advent Children. They managed to keep many of the elements of the game intact while telling a continuation of the story. And I'm enough of a fanboy to realize that they were catering heavily to that crowd with all of one's favorite characters from the game beautifully rendered in all of the exotic locales. Plus they brought back Nobuo Uematsu for the music to create variations of the original Final Fantasy VII themes to be played throughout the movie. Amusingly enough, the geek that I am, while being bored, I decided to randomly check who did the translation and subtitle job that I had acquired, and it was none other than one of my friends from my fansubbing days. I guess the scene really hasn't changed much since I left.

Advent Children did arrive, just as he suggested, and clad only in a masterfully constructed fansub we dove headfirst into a liquid pool of concentrated fanservice.

It should have a warning of some kind on it, when it hits retail. Something like:

Fanboy Warning

</i>This film contains scenes that may be totally fucking awesome. Your favorite characters may be rendered in extreme detail as they take part in mind-blowing battles set in familiar locales. Futuristic scabbard/motorcycles might be depicted in a way that makes them appear sweet.</i>

Then you'd at least have a little heads-up. Even coming into it as I did, with full knowledge of that we were about to receive, I was not prepared for the old emotions to thaw thus and then boil. I'm sorry if discussions about pirated materials agitate you, if you were able to resist it than you're just a better person than I am. At least now you know you're waiting for something good.

My actual subbing experience did involve digisubs(granted it was before they really got huge), but I never did much except check for grammar and providing some encoding help. I did learn the basics of how to do such things with all of the joys of genlocks though.

Was I the only one who actually liked the Final Fantasy movie?

(I was in high school at the time and had seen virtually no anime.)

I would've enjoyed it more had I not been an avid fan of the series at the time. Or if it had come out with a different title. It just strayed too far from the themes of a Final Fantasy game, and really was better served as a graphics demo.

Agreed. Good graphics demo. Terrible story.
