Aug. 23rd, 2005 @ 11:53 pm Alyssa's Wedding
Instead of having some sort of wild and crazy quarter-century birthday celebration last weekend, I went to Maine for Alyssa's wedding. And since my weekend couldn't merely be single booked, Otakon and CorboBash also decided to happen. At least I took full advantage of my newfound age and rented a car while I was traveling all weekend.

The way I figure it, Otakon happens every year, whereas Alyssa is only getting married once, so that's probably more worth going to. Plus in the heat of summer, being in the nice cool state of Maine couldn't hurt. From the time that we set foot in the state to the time that I left, I had 4 straight meals with the famed Maine lobster in all sorts of different configurations(straight up, in an omelet, in a dumpling, and in a roll) all of which were delicious.

The morning of the wedding, uberfluffy, mrsuberfluffy, and ultraliner decided to wander around Bar Harbor and take a lobster catching tour. While wandering, we found a puzzle shop, and decided that uberfluffy should ultimately start a puzzle shop when he retires. The lobster tour was a very neat little boat ride into into the water, and our captain and first mate went into great lengths about the sealife in the area, and the art of lobster catching. Amusingly enough, it quickly turned into a petting zoo, as they had a prepared aquarium filled with lobsters, fish, starfish, sea cucumbers, snails, etc for the perusal of the us(and the multitude of asian tourists on the boat). ultraliner managed to demonstrate that one doesn't need a muscle car to pick up women, as he did quite a good job of doing so by showing off his digital SLR camera.

Alyssa and Konrad's wedding itself was like a Tivo version of a wedding. All of the boring parts were edited out, and thus it was nice and quick, with only the good parts. They both seemed amazingly happy together, and I'm sure that they can look forward to a wonderful life together. A series of amusingly complicated heuristics were given from the hosts to direct us from the church to the reception site(Alyssa's parents alternate Maine home). Luckily we didn't wind up utilizing the panic failure heuristic of calling them for directions(thanks to the sweet voice of John Cleese in my GPS) or meeting with the Canadian border patrol to send us into the proper place. A fun evening of seeing lots of friends that I haven't seen in a while ensued, and I learned the fun and exciting words like Schadenfreude, which incidently is dictionary.com's word of the day.

On Sunday we went off to Freeport to wander through the outlet stores, while leaving ultraliner behind to goto the post-wedding brunch. Freeport's a fairly neat location with a ton of outlet stores all built into many buildings which were formally homes and the like. Unfortunately since Eugene wanted to go to the brunch instead of going shopping with us, his ride to the airport flaked out and he was late in getting to the airport, and thus missed out flight. Luckily the next one was only an hour and a half later, but it's still an annoyance for him,
