This weekend I made it all the way out to Chicago to participate in the Iron Chef^H^H^H^HEditor competition at Anime Central this year. I had some fun in getting to my flight on time(since my project group decided that we needed to have a Friday the 13th delivery in addition to our April Fool's release). Once there, it wasn't quite peachy, as the group of us panelists spent a good 24 hours attempting to get our comp badges and Pillows concert tickets. But ultimately we managed to get everything, and the con could commence.

Even with the misorganization of the staff at ACen, the security staff was all uppity. When we were trying to get into the Pillows concert(a few minutes after it started), a security guy was trying to stop us from going in because there weren't any seats left(despite them only giving out a nunber of tickets to correspond with the number of seats). I just walked past the guy(since anime fans are inherantly non-confrontational and wouldn't actually stop someone), and almost made it to the door when I saw Lynn hanging out. Thus to screw with the security guy, I brought Lynn(the staffer who we were friends with) to beat the staffer down and let the rest of the group into the concert. The Pillows concert itself was mediocre. Apparenrly they have no new songs since the height of their fame with FLCL, and they played stuff from the album that I grabbed of theirs way back when. The music was still fun, though the venue was absolutely dreadful. Think of echos of the quality of the TMBG concert in the UC while we were in college.

For those of you who don't know what Iron Chef/Editor is, it's an anime music video editing competition loosely based on the Iron Chef cooking show. Two editors are given identical machines, a couple of predefined sources before the contest to prepare, and a secret ingredient to be revealed at the event itself. Then we have 2 hours to come up with a video using whatever music we choose. This was made all the more challenging by virtue of the fact that I hadn't edited an anime music video in years. This year we had Gunsmith Cats, Battle Angle, and Shinesman as our sources, and Gargoyles to round out the set as the sekrit ingredient. After the competition, an expert panel of judges bigbigtruck, dwchang, and ashyukun grade the videos on editing, use of theme, use of sources, and use of secret ingredient. Since watching two people edit is horribly boring, Greggo was recruited to run one of his excellent gameshows to keep the audience entertained.

The contest itself was a lot of fun. trythil managed to figure out that I was the sekrit competitor(not that it was that hard to figure out since they displayed it for a split second while setting it up). That still didn't spoil my devious plans for the competition itself. When the competition started, trythil was treated to a black linux screen with the prompt "0WNED>". I had secretly replaced his editing machine with a knoppix cd, and wondered how long it'd take for him to notice. The audience got a good kick out of that, esp when I started trash talking Linux, ripped out the keyboard of my machine and started smashing it all over the place(esp over his chair while he was sitting in it for a while). There were keycaps all over the stage as we were walking around after the event. I'm amazed that he didn't notice, but I suspect that he was still shaken over seeing Linux on his screen instead of Premiere.

My other good moment came when some random video came on(maybe dwchang's Azumanga Die-oh video), and people like atomx, and koopiskeva jumped out of their seats and started rocking out to the song. They were clumsy in their drunken rocking and they bumped the table with my computer on it, so I threw down my headphones, jumped up, threw horns, and screamed "PARTY HARD!!!" at the top of my lungs. Then I resumed editing as if nothing happened.

As far as editing was concerned, I'm so rusty, and the editing station was setup at a horrible unergonomic height, so my right arm started cramping up horribly partway through. Plus we were using 6.5, which was a step backwards for me, since I was used to Pro(thanks to hhd). I forgot that 6.5 had that wonky audio scrubbing, which meant that all of the syncs that I had wasted time on editing in the beginning of my video were way off. But ultimately with a lot of haphazard editing, I managed to fill the minute or so clip of my song choice.

Once we were done trythil and I laid down our bets as to who would win(a whopping $1) to give the event more meaning. As the videos were rendering, we had a competition to see whose posse was geekier, and mine apparently won out. ;) Both videos were then show, the judges went off to confer before announcing the winner. Ultimately after much deliberation(or a coinflip), I was selected as the winner, but the incredibly thin margin of one point. I agreed with the judges in that trythil had a better edited and better storytelling video, but I made better use of all the ingredients including the secret one. Plus I apparently got mad props for using a ska song, as though that were a rare thing in videos... *shrug* Unfortunately this means that I'm stuck going back to ACen next year to defend my title. Anyone want to get married that weekend, so I have an excuse not to go?

Otherwise, I did get to see lots of awesome videos, including koopiskeva's amazing Euphoria 2 and suberunker's Still Preoccupied with 1985 which ultimately won best in show and is a fabulous video that I think is in the doki style. Still, seeing the awesome stuff that people are churning out now, makes me nostalgic for the those days in which I used to churn out cool stuff like that.

I'm sure I'll post pictures later in an edit when I get home and dump them on my site.

The four moshing were AtomX, Koop, Knives, and Brsrk. I know Brsrk, at the least, was sober.

The final outcome of the posse war was none on trythil's (of course) and five on yours.

Oh, I don't think trythil used Shinesman at all, either.

I have the MPEG2 of Still Pre-occupied, if you want it. IM me or something.

Nope. I'd never seen a frame of it until I got to ACen, and I figured that I should probably focus on making an entertaining video before I started to figure out ways to make it all work out.

I was distracted by After Effects, though :P

Yeah, the After Effects was definately unsettling to see when I turned around to look at your screen. But then again, we knew that I'm a crappy editor nowadays...

It should have been a friendly reminder that I tend to get too focused on the fluffy crap, as opposed to what actually matters :P

Intimidation > actual usefulness

Why do you think I arranged for you to see a linux prompt when we "started" the event?

Huh, I'll have to check out that video, since I wasn't paying much attention to the goings on while editing.

Congratulations, you've now been replaced with a newer model of editor with a similar style of photoshopping joke, but with newer more popular music, as well as a lowering job, spinners, and cold cathode lights to make him faster.

Tis ok. All of us do random stupid things. But I do recommend the video when it does come out, it certainly is a fun one.

I was sorely tempted to join, and nearly did so.
