Aug. 3rd, 2004 @ 10:51 am O, teh kon!

Overall, I'd say that Otakon this year was a great deal of fun, though as per normal, I'd have to say that I spend less and less time doing actual con events, and more and more time hanging out with people. It's quickly becoming a make your own fun con(though I still do things like go see the amv contest and the concerts). Thursday prereg worked out better than last year, as they started out at 4PM(though as the night went on, it took less and less time to go through). I think it took falsedrow and I about 1.5 hours to go through, whereas dwchang who came in about 2 hours after we did managed to get through in only half an hour. Of course, dwchang literally gave me updates every 5 minutes in his journey towards the convention. After getting out con badges, we went off to Unos for a lovely dinner to being the massive hanging out with teh peeps.

Almost nothing happened on Friday of note before the amv contest. In fact, it got so boring that gambitt and I started going through actionjbone's manga and backing it up with our digital cameras. When we headed over to the amv contest with quu we had negotiations for priority seating for the various AMV creators, so the Otakon staff graciously gave us seats in the 4th row, in the far left(so far that you couldn't see any of the screens. To this, our response was screw this, we'll just get in line, at least we'll have a good shot at getting a seat in the middle to see the videos that the finalists slaved over. After getting in line(and watching dwchang get beaten by kusoyaro constantly, we made it into the main events room, and guess where they were seating when we got in? The frickin 4th row of the far left! Talk about cruel irony. Luckily the guy who we were talking with for the seating saw the cruel irony in those events and made sure that we got better seats in the staff section.

As for the amv contest, since I had nothing in it this year(due to not having enough time to come up with an entry) it's much more relaxing to watch it without having any sort of nervousness of everything getting shown properly and such. Contest overall was decent, not as good as in previous years, and definately enough for me to decide that Otakon contests are kinda like Star Trek movies - every other one is good. Thus since this year was an even year, on the whole it wasn't as good as in previous years. Next year, I'll guarantee an awesome contest. ;)

The AMV creation panel unfortunately had the same moderator as in previous years, which kinda irks me. Supposedly he's the one who created the first anime music video over 20 years ago(well before most of the creators where even born). Unfortunately he makes a terrible moderator, as he has this knack for trying to interject his own points into the panel, and tell the same stories that he's been telling for the past 3 years since he's been the moderator. Maybe if the creators talk to the people in charge of Otakon, we can get someone new to take over that position for next year. At the very least, there will be bingo to be played.

The L'arc en Ciel concert was being held about 2 blocks away from the convention center, and this place just happened to be across the street from our hotel room. Thus we decided to chill out in the room and wait for the line(which we could see from the room) got moving at a good rate before actually going in. We got to hear about mckeed's fascination with self-defecation during this time. Fitting 12,000 people into that arena was no problem, and they were allowed to have a very impressive light and fireworks show throughout the concert. They played a very good set, including Blurry Eyes(the only L'arc song that I really knew), and the light show complemented their music quite well. The lead singer had amazing Engrish skills with some of his better lines being:

"Do you like to eat crab?!?!" (think of poorly pronounced crab as sounding like crap)
"I AM EVANGELION!!! GOING BERSERK!!!"
"Do you want to eat my banana?"

This was all complemented by the lead singer jumping around and swaying his hips very suggestively the entire performance. I think this was the first time that I had ever seen a guitarist actually break a string on stage and slam the guitar into the ground in frustration while a techie brought out a new one in mid song. I think most of us would pay just to see that guy on stage just using his Engrish the entire time. Hell, I think many of us would buy the DVD just for the video clip of him saying "I AM EVANGELION!!! GOING BERSERK!!!"

Corbo Bash was as awesome as it was this year as last. Thanks to stealthe who graciously hosted an awesome party for the rest of us. Got to talk with a lot of new people, and take many photos of drunken antics, which can be found at http://photos.bogosort.org/Otakon2004

Of vague note for Corbo Bash events:
After a bit of conversation, mckeed and some random lesbian named Emily both agreed that they needed some deep dicking.
Tom getting pwned when he fell asleep with his shoes on.
Me losing my shirt somehow...
Chatting with various people that I hadn't met before the con, including scintilla72, cyanna, and firestormxiii.

As I left, Corbo handed me a bottle of Smart Water muttering something about it preventing hangovers. Somehow I managed to chug the entire thing by the time that I went to bed(and despite having quite a bit to drink) I was blissfully hangover free the next day.

Somehow going to Otakon every year manages to inspire me to do more video editing, whereas I don.t wind up doing most of it until just before the Otakon deadline every year. I.ve got lots of ideas for stuff to do for a video idea that I got a respectable start on(which was intended for this past Otakon). But ultimately, I might wind up doing another video idea that.s been bouncing in my head for a while for next Otakon. An idea that would make princessdiablo and fizzbang very happy.

Well I did have the idea when Fred showed me the song long ago, and have only been putting it off due to lack of time and energy for editing. Still, I think it would make for an awesome Otakon entry by the nature of the video.

The only tidbit I learned in college that is useful in everyday life:

A lot of the symptoms in hangovers are caused by dehydration - alcohol is a diuretic and after drinking a lot, people tend to get dehydrated. I think my prof said she knew people who swore by aspirin and water before bed, and a friend of mine favors Gatorade - but basically water is your friend, sooner rather than later. So that suggestion was actually based on sound biological precepts. :)

Yeah, usually my typical hangover prevention methology involves just drinking regular water, but mainly I was supprised by such a smallish bottle preventing a hangover. I think it had electrolytes and the like very much so like Gatorade. It's all good information to have, and at least your college experience got you practical information. All I got was an inability to do arithmetic.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that's probably it, then. Electrolytes, maybe some vitamins (not sure what they put in that stuff).

Who is this echoing? I believe somebody else once listed him/her in a post when they actually were referring to me, and I checked his/her user info and didn't find any people I knew on his/her friends list...

Huh, I know I put in scintilla, but I guess I forgot the 72, and ended up with echoing I guess I should fix that.

If somebody changes their name on LJ, LJ still detects the old name and automatically changes it to the new one. So at some point in the past, "echoing" was called "scintilla," and LJ auto-updates the tag.

(Somebody on my flist did that, and it worked retroactively; it's weird to see your posts change without you personally editing them.)

Some girl demanding a drink from Jimmy

LOL yeah, that'd be me. But I wasn't drinking mixed drinks, so I wonder what the hell I was talking about? Whatever it was I was quite intense about it ^_^

There, now you've been upgraded to being jescaflowne. But you sure did look demanding, with the look of "Give me the drink that I want, the way that I want it, and 5 minutes ago, biotch!"
