Jan. 31st, 2004 @ 04:44 am Snow vs Lee, the mighty battle!
The snow was posturing for a great match this week. It's hard work in training had prepared it mentally and physically for the best 7 matchup vs Lee to see who will ultimately come on top.

Day 1: Warming up
The plan was for princessdiablo, mr_mking, malthus42, uberfluffy, queftzefoni, aexx to go down to DC for some boxty at Fado's Irish Pub, and to go see Bobba Ho-tep. The snow was trying quite hard to stop us from reaching our destination, however, aexx's brand new Hybrid Civic managed to navigate the snow without too many problems beyond the stupid drivers on the road. The snow, hoever, did manage to call up reenforcements in the way of the Duke-Georgetown game which drew many people into town for lunch. This caused Fados to be completely full, and with a ridiculuous wait. Thus after some pondering, we decided to look for other places, and we finally settled on RFDs with their 300 beers available, and practically everything cooked in beer of some form or another.

After lunch, we finally made our way to the Landmark E street theatre to go see Bubba Ho-tep. It was a very awesome theatre that none of us had been to before. They apparently show a bunch of independant films, and we felt right at home there when we saw many posters for older non-Hollywood classics there. The actual screen itself that we saw it in didn't have a particularily large capacity(maybe 100 or so), thus making the experience feel much more like we were seeing something special. They showed several trailers, including one for the Triplets of Belleville, which I really want to see(and is even up for an Oscar). Luckily for me, they are playing it in this very theatre, so us DC area people should go and see it. The actual movie itself was actually quite unexpectedly entertaining, dispite its rather unusual premise - Elvis and JFK in a senior nursing home fighting Zombies. And it didn't even generate into the usual(though fun) one liner campiness that Bruce Campbell movies tend to degenerate into.

Result: Draw (Snow .5, Lee .5)

Day 2: Snow's battle for the lead

Now the snow was finally ready to begin wrecking plans. Monday had arrived, and it was time for the snow to use all of its might to keep people from driving anywhere. It blew and fell and spread across the landscape so that only white was visible for as far as the eye can see. At this rate, the decision was made that it wasn't worth the trouble of going to work(the fact that the local community wasn't plowed at all just further contributed to this idea. The fact that the DC area wes on Weather emergency weather conditions helped that a bit too. Thus a snow day from the working word occured.

Result: Snow Win (Snow 1.5, Lee .5)

Day 3: Fight back to work

The snow had appared to exhaused itself with it's blanketing of the landscape with something like 6-8 inches, and thus made a narrow possibility that one could make it into work. After spending spending a couple of minutes shovelling the MINI out(thankfully the forsight to do the bulk of the shoveling on Day 2 made this task much easier). The MINI's DSC(tracion control) aided a lot in keeping the power to the wheels that weren't futily spinning uselessly and eventually got out of the neighborhood without too much difficulty. Once on the major highways, travelling was easy. This would've been the start of a nice full day of work, except that the snow had actually been plotting for a comeback second round. The afternoon would bring the wrath of the snow in the form of extremely cold temeratures and freezing rain. Thus forcing interpred workers to flee from work early in order to get back before the roads freeze over.

Result: Draw (Snow 2.0, Lee 1.0)

Days 4-5: Lee's mighty comeback!

The snow, being quite tired after overextending itself with the second round of freezing rain was completely unable to muster any sort of offence or defense during these two days. Thus enabling perfectly normal days of work without anything unusual beyond the MINI being covered in the salt leftover on the roads from the area's attempts to clear off the snow and ice that was brought by the weather. In this time, Lee also worked on getting Kappa2 setup properly, as therefore getting a new and improved photosite all setup and ready for consumption. This combined with Comcast upgrading their cable networks results in a decent photobrowsing experience for all.

Result: Lee Win (Snow 2.0, Lee 3.0)

Day 6: Mighty LAN powers activate!

Finally after a couple of days of resting, the snow wanted to make a final stand in hopes of defeating Lee towards the end of this battle. The beginning of the week had many rumors that the snow had planned for a final showdown and layering of the area in it's cold blanket to finish off any who would date to oppose it. Yet there were plans for Lee, his brother, drfell, queftzefoni, and Swab to make the trek down to Springfield, VA for blacktw's glorious LAN party. Many plans were made for the attempt to get down there, but the snow's hand had yet to be seen, and they could easily throw a wrench in the entire thing.

However, all that the snow had given was a bunch of talk. Nothing came from it. A small dusting of snow was all that it could muster all evening. Didn't prevent anyone from going to work, or enjoying the LAN party to follow in the evening. The LAN party was a fun time, as many people including princessdiablo and in addition to the ones mentioned above. Many awesome games were played including StarCraft, WC3, UT2003, BF1942 and Call of Duty to round out the evening.

Result: Lee wins (Snow 2, Lee 4)
Victory for Lee!

Though since the battle must go on in a best of 7 match even though there's a clear winner, we present:

Day 7: Attack of the Mongolian Guitars

To prepare for this battle, we had to discover our enemy well. Thus Lee, drfell, queftzefoni, and smoovygee all went out to BD's Mongolian Barbeque to understand the battle strategies of the Mongol hordes. They feasted upon the flesh of the enemy cows, chicken, and sheep in true mongol style. It was a mighty fesst!

Afterwards, they used their newfound knowledge to trek up to Owings Mills to go see International Guitar Night at The Gordon Center. That was an excellent venue for seeing the dazzling variety of guitar performances by Brian Gore, Guinga, Andrew York, and Pierre Bensusan. They were all amazing guitar players, though Andrew York's very distinctive use of the low end and Pierre Bensusan's fingerpicking styles were absolutely astounding. They each played a couple of solo pieces, followed up by duets with every possible pair. Finally they played 2 pieces that involved all four combining each of their distinctive styles into single musical pieces. Definately an amazing performance.

I want Mongolian BBQ again already. Yeesh.

Are we going to try for Dragonfly Friday? I'd like to not make it a terribly late night (for a Friday), but sounds like a neat place if we can find it and get there.

Last I checked, that was still the plan, unless you've decided to have conflicts. =P So are we also trying for Triplets this weekend. I'd really like to do so...

I'd really like to also... Either Sunday evening (I have class in Shady Grove until 3) or next Saturday evening (14th)?

It's gotta be on Sunday afternoon/evening, and we can prolly try to do dinner or something like that. On the 14th Katsucon is happening, so I'm not going to be around.

Sounds good. I should be out of class at 1500. Any time after that works for me. Less-late is good, but whatever works.

Re:

We could try for like a 5ish show or something along those lines. Or do something way later, and do dinner first.

Re:

It's a bar in DC that's supposed to be a kickass place to go. That and having good sushi there couldn't hurt.

Sweet. I'm in, if you folks want some company. I'm also interested in seeing the Triplets of Belleview this weekend. I haven't made any plans for this weekend yet, so I'm pretty open on dates/times.

PS. How come your personalized LJ page is missing all the background colors? It has the corner icons, but it's all white besides those.

Mills and I were discussing seeing Triplets on Sunday afternoon/evening after he gets off of his crazy class.

I think LJ's getting pwned, so they are trying to conserve bandwidth by not showing images.

Oh, good. I might be in Bethesda on Sunday, although it looks like it's only playing at the Chinatown theater on E street at 2:20 PM, 4:40, 7:15, 9:25. (and some other places I've never been to)

Re: Sushi Bar

Yeah, we were looking at those times. Our plan was to possibly try to hit the 4:45 showing if possible, but if not, we could get tickets for the 7:15 one and do dinner beforehand. It's all dependant on when Mills decides to exist again.

Re:

It's a bar-type-place that looked neat (well, Lee and I thought so anyway).

And I'm done with class on Fridays. I've lost Wednesdays now.
